The project was to create a hand warmer made from cheap materials that could be sold in the student store on campus. They would have to be easy and safe to store and, when activated, would need to have a heat increase of 20 degrees Celsius.
Our hand warmer uses a very simple design. It is essentially 1 bag with 2 pockets. These pockets are filled with water and our salt, Calcium Chloride. They are kept from mixing on their own by a clip which hold down the part of the bag where the pockets are connected. To start the reaction, all we had to do was unclip the top and turn the bag upside down, shaking it a bit.
Two things I think we did well were our presentation and our simple design. Our slideshow presentation is very sleek and easy to read. No pages have too complicated or too many bullet points. We spent a lot of time on our presentation and I think it shows. Another success was our design, which was simple but effective. I think this can be attributed to the many, many different prototypes we thought of and made, always taking the previous idea and combining it with others we had or simplifying it. Sometimes, the simplest ideas work the best, and our hand warmer seems to be proof of that.
Two things we didn't do very well on were staying on topic and staying serious. For much of the work time we were goofing off or doing something else on the computers (when usually one of us was the only one working). This hurt the productivity of the team because it meant two thirds of the workers weren't working. Anther thing we struggled with was staying serious in our presentation. We continually snuck in funny gifs, culminating in an absolutely ridiculous end card. It's not the end of the world, but it does kinda ruin the mood.
